Importing Sneakers into the U.S.

It is important to correctly classify sneakers according to their Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) codes when importing them into the United States

The HTS Code for a product determines its duty rate, applicable free trade agreements, regulations, and more.

The classification of sneakers depends on two factors: the material comprising the greatest external surface area of the upper part of the shoe, and the material of the external surface area of the outer sole.

To classify sneakers, you can refer to the HTS code database, which includes a category for "tennis shoes, basketball shoes, gym shoes, training shoes, and the like", which covers athletic footwear other than sports footwear, whether or not principally used for such athletic games or purposes.

Footwear falls under Chapter 64 of the HTS database, so all footwear will be classified with 64 as the first two digits. The remaining 8 digits of the code depend on the specific materials and features of the sneakers.

After consulting the HTS code database and using the country of origin of the sneakers to determine the proper classification code, you can figure out the applicable duty rate. You may want to consult an import-export specialist to get expert advice on the HTS code and trade status of your sneakers.
